Posted: February 1, 2012 in On Our Minds

What is literacy? Literacy is defined in the dictionary as the ability to read and write. But this definition  misses the point of what literacy really is:  the ability to communicate, the ability to comprehend and create meaning. To communicate, to connect, perhaps to entertain. There can be many barriers to this: social class, language barriers, cultural barriers to name a few. How aware are we of these and how fluid are we in our ability to look beyond some of  what we take as “normal” or “standard” in order to serve our population? And what does service mean?
